Gaming Weekend Complete

A nice long gaming weekend wrpas up... went to my friend Mike's house for the weekend as did 4 of my other good gaming friends. Got there Friday night and spent some time with Mike (while we waited for the others guys to arrive) playing Rez HD and Street Fighter 4 on his giant screen. Then when the the othger guys got there we payed some Warmachine!

It was late so we did a small team game, Circle and Cryx agaist a team of 2 Skorne players. My Circle performed brilliantly, and we won the game without my army even taking any damage. We didn't get to sleep until close to 3:30.. but at 10 Am we were up and ready to play some more... I faced my friend Josh's new Skorne army, led by Zaal.. and 3 terrible Ancestral Guardians... but my Epic Kaya army managed to pull off a win.. it was a great game, a real slugfest on both sides. The next two battles did not go in my favor as much... my Khador (Zerkova) lost to Cryx (eDeneghra), but it was a fun battle. Saturday night we spent the time watching Dr. Horribl;e and Robot Chicken Star Wars on Mike's giant screen, and watching a bunch of game trailers... and again.. didn't get to sleep until 3-ish. Today (my birthday) was spent playing one more game, in which I again lost with my Morvahnna Circle Army being destroyed by Legion of Everblight. But even when I lose, I still have a great time.

We also talked about the upcoming 4e campaign we are going to start soon. We discussed some things in my game world, Earthynn, and we actually have the characters for the party chosen. I was pleased with how the character choices panned out, everyone got to play the character they really wanted, and we still ended up with a balanced party. Here's what we ended up with:

Dragonborn Warlord
Halfling Rogue
Shifter Druid
Goliath Warder
Tiefling Sorceror
Dwarven Bard

We may actually get to start playing this campaign next month.. heres hoping!

All in all, it was a great weekend of good food and gaming.(and very little sleep) I couldn't have asked for a better way to spend my birthday than with my friends... only thing missing was being able to see my family.

Pathfinder

Ok.. just got back from Philadelphia and some great role-playing... playing in the Pathfinder RPG system.  A brief summation followed by some highlights...

We only get to play for about 6 hours.. so the story progresses slowly.. but we have a great time none the less.  We have been hunting an escaped fugitive who had been working with some local goblin tribes... we tracked the goblin to their fortress which was situated on a rocky-cliff island off the coast.  It towered 80ft up and was only reachable by a rope bridge that swayed precariously over the waters... getting to the bridge itself was a challenge due to a huge maze or brambles/thorns that the goblins used as a forward base/guard house protecting the bridge and entrance to the fortress.

Highlights:
  • Maze of brambles patrolled by a Goblin Druid and his panther-like companion, he was playing hide-n-seek within the brambles, some entangling ensued...
  • Reached Bride, took out some Goblin "snipers" with Wand of Produce Flame
  • Crossing the bridge.. was actually a trap, one side fell away.. and of course.. my character fell.  When he hit the water he had 0 HP.. was able to Channel Positive Energy to Heal, but flailed around, my swim check was -6 at the time, until a rope was finally able to be lowered and I was pulled to safety... almost has to make a new character.
  • Searched goblin fortress... found a pen of rabbits the goblins kept for food...our gnome talked to them and freed them to "run amok" in the fortress... lol... silly gnomes...
  • We stopped to rest before reaching the fortress, calculated exp and got to 3rd level!  but our party, has a habit of NOT resting long enough for spellcasters to regain spells... (we have a cleric and sorcerer)
  • Stumbled into the "throne room", lots of goblins, goblin war chief, goblin war singer, a couple goblin dogs, and a big lizard creature (war chief's mount)... big battle, but we had to stop there...
Up till now we had been playing a combination of Pathfinder and 3.5 DnD.. this adventure we switched fully over into Pathfinder.  Here's the big changes to clerics..
Turn Undead is now Channel Positive Energy.  Only usable a number of times per day = to your CHA modifier + 4... My 3rd Level cleric can do it 6 times per day.  30' Radius burst, all undead take 1d6 Dmg per 2 caster levels, and make Will save (CHA based) or flee, save can also half damage.  Any living creatures in the burst are healed the same amount.  Waaaay better than Turn Undead... simple, easy to understand, cool, and very useful.

Domains - You still pick two, but instead of providing you with an extra spell choice for each spell level you know, they provide specific bonus spells (as spell like abilities) or special powers.. I think they hit every 3 levels.. example, my cleric has the Sun and Glory domains:
  • Touch of Glory -grants target a bonus to any CHA based check = to my caster level
  • Shield of Faith 2/day
  • Sun's Touch - Melee touch attack vs Undead, Damage = 1d8 + Caster Level
  • Produce Flame 2/day
I get all of those powers/spells.. I don't pick and choose.. I get another power/spell from each domain at level 4, then at level 8.

Basically, they made all the character classes more varied, and took out any of the clunkier abilities.  Everyone has more options...which is a good thing.  :)

Gaming Overload...(big long post)

... I'd have it no other way.

Actually, not really an overload... but there is a lot going on in my gaming space these days.

I am playing in a Pathfinder game being run by my friend Jason down in Philly.  Right now its looking like we'll be playing that game once per month.  Our game next month is this coming weekend.  I am playing a Cleric, and we are having a great time.  Pathfinder is the best version of 3.5 I've played, some interesting changes in there... some of the rules are cleaned up and streamlined (Turn Dead became Channel Positive Energy.. waaay better now).  We are playing through the published Pathfinder adventures... which are very well written and very cool.  This is a different group than the group I am running in our Iron Kingdoms 4e game.  (some of the guys are the same though)  The IK group is made up of my best friends, so I am very fond of those gaming sessions.  Unfortunately that is the game we don't get to play quite as often, due mostly to distance, but we have another game scheduled for mid-March.(usually we play.. every 3 months or so...)  I love the Iron Kingdoms world, but I find it very limiting and somewhat difficult to write adventures for (from a DM standpoint).   So, I guess I should be thankful we don't play this campaign as often, because it gives me more time to write the stories.  :)  (always look for that silver lining!)  But that campaign is going well.  We just finished up a the last adventure a couple weekends ago... and we document that campaign on our wiki site.

But that's not all!  One of the reasons we play the IK campaign so rarely is that it is difficult to get all the players together at one time in order to play.  Some times a few guys can make it, but not everyone... and the story really requires all the characters to be there... not too mention nobody really wants to miss an episode of the story, so we conceded that we would not play the campaign unless all the character were present and accounted for.  Add an additional complication...we are adding another player to our IK game.. so it'll be that much more difficult to get everyone together... SO (sorry, a long winded explanation leading up to this) we are going to start yet another campaign.  This one will be a classic D&D campaign, set in 4e, using all 4e has to offer.  I miss the classic monsters and races (that are non-existent in IK).  I miss the Beholders, the Mind Flayers, the Umberhulks, the Chromatic Dragons... and I long for an (for lack of better phrase) old skool DnD game.  So, I will be running this campaign as well, and this will be run with the same guys in the IK group, but we'll play this whenever we cannot play the IK game, so if someone can't make it for IK, we'll play D&D 4e.  It will also be more "casual" so if someone can't make it, no big deal, we still play.  Also, depending on when/where we play, there may be very different people playing from one game to the next.  I am working on some sort of idea that will explain why characters suddenly pop in and out of the story... maybe the Astral Plane (or some other plane) is too close to the world and occasionally the balance gets knocked out of whack... and people get pulled in?  Who knows...   Also we were toying around with the idea of playing using one the new Virtual Game Table programs out there to play online when we can't make it together in person.   Wizard's of the Coast is supposed to be making one.. but damn they are taking their sweet ass time on it... so we may go with a third party system.  Fantasy Grounds looks very promising...but its not free.

But the really big news surrounding this is that I am going to create the game world the campaign take place in.  This is something I have not done before (create a world from scratch) so we'll see how it goes.  4e seems to be a good system to create a world in... and I am quite excited.  I will hopefully soon, have some beginning info up on here for your review.  It will be a "typical" fantasy world.. and will follow the 4e idea of towns/cities being "spots of light in the darkness".  I will begin with some general thoughts, and a breakdown similar to this post about  Lokipan's Rimoria.  And needless to say.. I will be stealing ideas from other campaign worlds.. all the cool DM's are doing it these days..  :D

I am also still in the middle of several video games... been playing Fable 2 some more, mainly to play through the DLC, Knothole Island, which was pretty cool.  Now I am just trying to wrap up some other quests (finding the rest of the Gargoyles, Silver Keys, and Archaeology scrolls) and just messing around.  I have an evil character started, but I just don't find it as fun as my good character.  The game is so fun and has such a cool world, its hard to stay away for long (not too mention my wife always wants sex.. sheesh)... I am also closing in on the end of Dead Space, which is an excellent game.  And I'd love to finish Mirror's Edge (brilliant game) if I can ever get past the one really tough part I am stuck on (game is hard)...  Dead Space is interesting.. it has an cool, although not very original, sci-fi story.. and its just a superbly crafted game, the interface, the sound, all top notch.  It borrows a ton of ideas from other games... Halo, Bioshock, Gears of War, Resident Evil, Doom 3Metroid Prime... but it takes those elements and applies them in interesting ways and manages to mix them up quite nicely.  Hoping to finish up those game before Street Fighter 4 comes out.. because I will probably not be playing anything else for weeks after SF4 hits.

And back on the tabletop front... I am getting behind in buying my Hordes/Warmachine models.. I have 2 armies, and one small custom army (pirates).. and the new faction for Warmachine, The Retribution of Scryah (aka, elves) is rumored to release at GenCon.. and I am definitely playing that faction.  The lore/history of the elves is the Iron Kingdoms is amazingly cool, one of the coolest cosmologies/histories I have ever read in  a game world.  So that means 4 armies to collect, build, and paint.  I really need to get caught up!  Oh, and add Infinity to that list, granted, Infinity requires far less models than Warmachine/Hordes so its a bit easier to keep up on. (though the models are all so cool, it makes you want to buy them all!)

Needless to say - my gaming life is busy; in one way or another... that was the point of this post.  On to a couple other things...

I am finding that life without cable TV... is OK.  Thanks to the Internet...  cable TV isn't really necessary.   There are not many shows I watch, but the ones I do watch.. I don't need cable for.  I watch BSG (available through iTunes and on Hulu.com), Legend of the Seeker (iTunes, Hulu), Clone Wars (iTunes, StarWars.com), Dr. Who (Netflix), and I recently downloaded ROME to rewatch it (torrent download).  So no need for cable TV... plus, all the shows I listed... I watch without commercials.  Can't beat that with a stick!

I also watched for the first time.. Final Fantasy: Advent Children (through Netflix streaming on 360) and I must say.. I really enjoyed it.  If you did not play Final Fantasy 7, then it will make no damn sense... because the whole movie is one big fan service to FF7 lovers.  But seeing the old gang back together (Vincent, Yuffie, hot hot Tifa) welled up so much nostalgia in me... I was practically misty eyed...it was cool.

Also, other than a few choice pieces from SideShow Collectibles and Gentle Giant... my Star Wars collection hasn't really gone anywhere lately... mainly for one big reason.  I have no money!  With all the models, game books, videogames (and bills) I have to pay for... I have not had much chance to collect much in a while.  I have long since given up on trying collect each year's sets of figures.. it becomes too hard to find them all, and buying sets of figures online becomes way too expensive.  Often I will will pick and choose specific types of figures to buy... but I haven't done that in a while.  But I think I am gonna start collecting astromech droids.  There's a bunch of them out these days.. and buying one figure or two each month won't be two bad... hopefully, I will soon  have an impressive collection of astromech droids adorning my shelf.

Lets see.. what else to ramble about.. mentioned Street Fighter 4 a bit earlier..  I am totally in the grips of Street Fighter Mania right now... there are other games out that I want to play, but Street Fighter Mania won't let me think of anything else..  I played some Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix the other night with Darkheel and Chaosturtle..  was much fun, I lost a bunch, but was undefeated with Chun Li.  Did I mention Street Fighter Mania?  I am still undecided on which characters I am gonna study in SF4... Chun Li of course.. but who else?  The options I am considering currently are E. Honda, Cammy, or Dhalsim.  I enjoy playing all of those...but Honda and Cammy are supposedly lower tier characters this time around... (so goes the word on the street and the interwebs)... I just don't know... there's always Rufus... hmmm.. or maybe Gouken (Sheng Long) if I played him.. then all of us would have one of that "style" of charatcer... (lokipan = Akuma, darkheel = Ryu, chaosturtle = Ken, bespin = Sheng Long)  That might be interesting... but that means I'd finally have to learn how to do a Dragon Punch...but theres always Rufus... look at him! he's got a bucket of popcorn!

Alright... I think I have rambled enough for this post...

UPDATE :  I beat Mirror's Edge!  Finally made it through the really tough part.. a really great game!

Real Life Update

So... not too much has happened that I would classify as "exciting" lately...

Work has stayed consistently busy.. not overly so, but enough that my days are always occupied.  Had my three year review this past week and got a decent raise. (yay for monies!)  My boss is the best boss to work for.  He is very respectful and considerate toward his employees, and he takes care of them.  (afterall, he did buy me an Xbox 360 a couple years ago for my Christmas bonus...)  We extended our hours on Saturday which means my schedule got tweaked slightly.. Saturdays are still "short" days (done at 2 PM) but now I have to get up early to open at 8AM... mornings and me don't really get along.

My friend Jason has been working as a Press Ganger for awhile now... running tournaments and events for Warmachine/Hordes.  He runs that at a store over in New Jersey (he lives in Philly) and has been trying to get me to go over there for one of the tournaments (there was one today but I stayed home).  I'd love to get to play Warmachine more often, but I am not really keen on playing with folks whom I don't know and I also don't care to play it competitively... I play more for the cool models, the story, and the game itself...  and for me its all about playing with my friends... and yes, Jason would be there, but I also dislike driving into strange places.  This would be about 1.5 hour drive (one way) and it'd be through the city.  (and whats stranger than New Jersey?)  I have a hard time motivating myself for such a trip.  I am hoping my other local friend (Mike) would be able to go as well, so we'd could drive up together... that I could more easily get behind...  I feel bad missing Jason's events though.  Too bad he can't Press Gang for a store that is more local...

I spent today playing some Fable 2.  This game is really great.  The world (called Albion) is equal parts Harry Potter, Charles Dickens, and Legend of Zelda... sprinkle in some dry British wit... and you have yerself a grand world to explore.  The overall story is classic.. a young boy(or girl if you choose) with a troubled past who must rise up and become a hero and save the land... but the interesting part is how you do it.  I have spent hours not doing anything related to the main quest...(but the main quest is very cool) there are just so many things to occupy your time.  You can buy a shop and run a business, buy property and rent it out, or live in it and get married, have a kid.. you can work as a blacksmith, wood cutter, bounty hunter, archaeologist, and others... you can have bard sing tales of your adventures to raiser you renown... make the ladies in town swoon over you (and sometimes the men) and basically.. live the life of an adventurer in a beautiful fairy tale land.  You can be good and help the people, or be selfish, or despicably evil... Right now I am playing a good character... (I always start on the good side).. everything you do effects your character and how people in the game view you.. eat a lot of meat and pies?  You get fat... fall in combat often?  you get scars... do evil deeds?  the people hear about it and their opinion of you changes...  You also have a dog who follows you throughout the game.. and he is awesome. (I named mine Chewbacca)  he finds treasures for you, helps you fight in combat, and warns you of danger...you really grow attached to him after a while.  Overall the game is a great experience all around... the controls are solid and easy to use.. and its just plain fun.  I give it a 333 on the Karl scale. (that's a high score btw).  I think when I finish with this I will try to play through as an evil character, and will probably try the female character.. (i always seem to play the female characters as evil... wonder what that says about me...?  I did the same thing in KOTOR and Mass Effect)  With the huge deluge of games coming out this fall, choosing has been difficult... many will have to wait...  But I am glad I got Fable..  One of my favorite people on the internet, Miyuki Jane Pinckard, wrote a great post about her own Fable 2 experience... from a woman's perspective... its worth reading.

So for the rest of the day I will listen to some audio.. maybe a book, maybe a podcast or something.. and start packing up my stuff... I will moving into the other side of the house later this week.  I mentioned this house situation here and here... but now it will get more inconvenient... at least I will be in the permanent address.. and can hopefully get ComCast over here to hook up the cable/Internet... apparently the mailing address we have is not the address they have in their database.. but we think we figured out the proper address, so when I get moved over there I will call them again.  Cripes.. I am sick of moving.  (even if this time it's only next door)  If the house was going to be finished.. I'd be more excited,  however; pretty much the upstairs is all that will be done... so the downstairs will be a work zone for a few months.   By the end of this coming summer I am hoping to have enough money saved up to move into my own place...

Great episode of Clone Wars this past Friday (I'll put my review up later in the week, need to watch the episode again).... If I was still 10 years old there would nothing greater in this world than that show.  Even at 32 I find it highly enjoyable.  If you are a Star Wars fan, you should be watching.

Reconnecting with old friends is a great thing.  I recommend it.

GEN CON 2008

Well, GenCon 2008 has come and gone. A good time was had by all. Went there with our usual group plus 2 guests. Dave (Dork), Jason (Jerk), Mike (Moron), Rob (Reject), Karl (Karl), and Andres and Josh (two friends of Jason's, Andres is from Chile):)
Here's my day by day wrap-up...

__Wednesday__
Wednesday was travel day... we left central Pennsylvania late morning, and drove allll day. Made a stop in Columbus Ohio (my old stomping ground) for some yummy Hound Dogs Pizza (Pizza for the People!)... we also stopped there to visit our friend Jason's sister.. but you know.. the pizza is good. Then we set back off to Indy! Got there around 11:30PM.. walked around a bit after checking into the hotel, and hit the sack.

__Thursday__
Day one of the Con! We got up and headed over to the convention center and got in line for the exhibit hall to open. then, as is normal for us, we went right to the Privateer Press booth and got in line for the release of Warmachine:Legends! The line was... well... long. Don't believe me? Check out this from Table Top Gaming News:
(You can even see ME standing there in line, just as the camera begins to spin around. Stop it at 0:06)

Its a great expansion to the game.. and their booth was packed to capacity all weekend. Its great to see the company getting so much success since I got in on the ground floor. I had ordered the Khador started pack online before they even released their first book. It was a great game then, and is a fantastic game now. The usual GenCon cosplay was in effect, and these two lovely ladies made for quite the sight, dressed as two members of the Witch Coven of Garlghast (Cryx warcasters)
They also were running demos of their new CMG (collectible miniatures game) Monsterpocalypse. I'm not really into CMG's... but it looked cool. And they were running their painting competition as normal, and had on display an amazing diorama.. again, thanks to Table Top Gaming News for the footage:

After that we had a game scheduled. It was clled Conquest of the Star Lords.. a strategic board game. I have wanted to find a good space battle board game for awhile now, but haven't really found one I liked. This one was OK, but not great. It was still fun to play though. After that we had some dinner, and then headed over to the mini's hall for some Warmachine/Hordes of our own. I had a really epic battle against Dave's Trollblood army using my Morvahna the Autumnblade led Circle Orboros army in which I barely irked out a victory. (a complex web of spells and one lone Tharn Wolf Rider managed to get me the win...) We played until the un-told hour of 4 AM... and then arose for Day 2...

__Friday__
Day 2 was our busy day...we played a new minis game called AE-WWII. Its basically a alternate reality World War 2 game.. where occult ideas are taken to the extreme.. there were psychic troopers, monkey men, and robots fighting alongside or against some American GI's and para-troopers.... it had some cool minis.. and some interesting mechanics.. but overall it didn't excite me too much. I'm not much of a historical mini's guy.. even if it is alt-history...I played on the Allied side, and we managed to win the primary objective, but failed our secondary one. Was a good time none the less. A solid game, just not my cup of tea.

Later we played another new miniatures game called Pulp City.. a game of super heroes.. this one also had a cool game mechanic and nice miniatures, but the demo we played in had way too many people (16) who were all crowded around a small gaming table. The game, and several of the characters were pretty cool, but the demo soured my opinion of it. I played a superhero called Androida, who was a cyborg with super speed. Some of the miniatures were neat, others were just OK. The coolest thing about it was the rules allowed you to do just about anything.. throw cars, scale tall buildings.. that sort of thing. The super heroes they had for the game didn't impress me, its too bad the game doesn't have a create-your-own-hero feature...but I supposed that's not possible to do with a miniatures game (they would then need a sculpt your own miniature feature I guess)...

After that we rushed over to the movie theater to watch Star Wars:The Clone Wars! I had pre-bought our tickets on-line, but it wasn't very crowded. And I have to say, I really enjoyed it! It was action packed from start to finish, it had some cool characters (including Assaj Ventress (one of my favorite Star Wars characters) and some parts that were very funny. :) A very good film if you just want to go and have fun. And a great addition to the Star Wars mythos if you are a Star Wars fan like myself. And I loved the animation... a really cool style, and great execution... It really has me looking forward to the animated series starting this October...

After the movie it was getting late.. but this is GenCon! So we went back to the mini's hall and played some more Warmachine/Hordes until 3 Am...

__Saturday__
Saturday we had no games planned, so this was our day to scour the exhibit hall and spend some money. This was also the day the wore our t-shirt as is our GenCon tradition. s (Dork, Jerk, Moron, Reject, Karl) We received lots of great compliments on the shirts, and even had several people ask to take our picture. I had already spent a chink of money getting my Privateer Press stuff, the new Legends book, and some new models that just came out or were on pre-release. So there wasn't alot of stuff I was looking for.. however; as always, I grabbed a few things...

Went to Paizo's booth and grabbed our copy of the sequel to The Gamers, called The Gamers:Dorkness Rising. We had all been waiting for the sequel to come out for years.. and its quite funny, and has much higher production values than the first, lol. :) Here is the trailer... I also picked up a sweet t-shirt at some other random booth (it makes me smile even thinking about it..)

And then, un-planned, I bought into a brand new miniatures game. I wasn't intending to start this game at GenCon, but Jason had been talking to me about it for a while.. its called Infinity (their site is cool, check it out). Its a sci-fi game.. best described as the creators describe it...

Infinity is a game with 28mm high metal miniatures that simulates combat and special operations in a science fiction environment with Manga aesthetics. Infinity miniatures are characterized by the high quality and detail of their modeling, the dynamism of their postures, and their futuristic aesthetic.

The miniatures are really nice looking, and the gameplay is fast and intricate.. and the model count for each army is quite low (10 for a large army) so the cost is kept down.. I choose the Yu Jing army (see the minis here), the "asian" faction... I am planning on painting them in a cool anime-style, bright colors, pink hair, etc.. I am looking forward to the painting and the playing, since it will give me a very different style to paint (apart from steam-punk fantasy style I paint for Warmachine/Hordes). I have been wanting a real "hardcore" sci-fi miniatures game for some time now, and I have found it. :)

One of the more exiciting moments of this day was meeting Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew)! He was ther signing autographs all throughout the convention. A really nice guy, and he's HUGE, in the picture he is sitting down and he is almost as tall as me :)

And of course, Saturday evening we squeezed in some more Warmachine/Hordes playing... though we went back to the hotel earlier than before... Dave, Mike and I didn't want to go to bed, since going to sleep would bring the end of GenCon 2008 that much sooner... so we just went down to the hotel lobby to hang out and talk. Thats the best part of GenCon: spending time with my friends.

__Sunday__
Day 4 dawned.. and we had our only role-playing game of the Con to go to. It was a sesssion of Mutants and Masterminds. This is a super hero rpg using a modified D20 system. Its really a stand out porduct all around, if you want a sgood super heor game, this is it. Our game went OK, it was fun. the DM that ran it was not the best, the story wasn't superb, but we still had fun playing. I was playing a charatcer with Time Control abilites, whilst others had such powers similar to Sabertooth, some shadow walking abilites, a very Captain American type characters, ad some others... the heroes in general were not well put togetehr, I'd rather just make my own.. but it was nice to try out the system.

Then we headied back into the exhibit hall to pick up a few more things, take in some more of the atmosphere... and then we packed up and headed home. We stopped in Central, PA for the night (where Rob and Dave live) and Dave and I decided to stay up and watch the Gamers DVD. I didn't get all the way through it, got too tired.. and a loose bat flying around Dave's house got kind of distracting, and we had to cower in fear as it flew past us.. eventually we got the door open and it mae its way outside.. those a freaky little animals... but the next morning I we resumed out trek and got home around Noon monday....

All in all... a very good vacation, a very good Con, a very good time with my friends, and I look forward to it next year. :)

GenCon 2007!

EDIT: BONUS! MORE PICS ADDED! :)

EDIT 2: Added Link to the True Dungeon Reveal! Check out the story of the cool dungeon we went through! :)

Actual shot from the streets of Indianapolis! What a cool town :)

So another GenCon has come and gone. Much fun was had by all. It was a great Con, as it always is.. lots of new stuff to buy, lots of babes to gawk at, lots of games to play, and lots of time with my good friends... a perfect weekend.

So what went down at GenCon? well lets start with Role-Playing...

The bigs RPG news was of course 4th Edition Dungeons and Dragons from Wizards of the Coast. Releasing in May 2008. I didn't actually attend the "unveiling event" I was busy playing other things (see below).. but you can watch the entire event on You Tube.. so its all good. Speaking of which, heres some of those vidoes now.. (don'tcha love the internet?)

PART 1

PART 2

PART 3

PART 4

So my opinion on this whole thing keeps changing... my first impression is What the Hell?? D20 has been going strong for years now, there is TONS of OGL content out there, and WotC itself has a bazillion books out there.. why re-do it all? After watching the vids.. I can see some of their reasoning.. and I am intrugued. I would like to go on.. but this is a overall GenCon post, not a 4th Edition DnD post.. catch me in the comments or in e-mail and we can talk specifically about it. One thing I will say that I am looking forward to with the 4E release are the online tools.. all I have to say is... Its about Fucking Time Wizards got their Heads out of the Archaic Asses! Online character builders? Online encounter builders? Online DnD playing (for those that live far apart)?.. Yes Please!

Other RPG type stuff.. we continued our yearly transformer game, ran by my friend/cousin Dave.. this time it had a twist where we were playing the bad guys. (I played a particularly evil Insecticon named, Mindswipe) It was great game, and much fun, as it always is. Dave runs a great game, and his love for Transformers shows through in his role-playing.

We also tried a new game I had been wanting to try for a while now. Its a large group RPG with alot of humor called Kobolds Ate My Baby...it was a blast.. you play little kobolds who are trying to ..well.. eat babies. You are not smart, and you die alot, usually in horrible ways. :) It is fun. Worth checking out.

How about Miniatures? well.. it was all about Hordes:Evolution.

Which is an amazing expansion to the already awesome miniatures game from Privateer Press. Their products get exponentially better year by year.. and this is no exception. The new models are awesome, and thier artists/sculptors never disappoint... the new Warpwolf Extreme Model is gorgeous... here are few pics I grabbed with my phone...

We also played a mini-campaign that we wrote that involved around the discovery and capture of an Arcane Mechanic and his rampaging warjacks. We didn't actually make it to the end of it.. (we did need to sleep ya know) .. but we had some awesome battles. A notable one was the battle betwixt myself playing Morvahna the Autumnblade (Circle Orboros) vs. my pal Rob playing Vlad (Khador).. it was a brutal battle that came down to warcaster vs. warlock.. the way all battles should end...

We also sampled a new board game.. the new StarCraft Board game from Fantasy Flight Games. Its was really awesome.. this is a game kinda of in the vein of Arkham Horror.. big, complex, and way fun to play.

Saw some cool WoW footage in the exhibit hall, they were running some of Wrath of the Lich King, which looks perty cool.. and Star Craft 2 was up and running.. and it looked amazing!

And it would not be GenCon without the ever evolving and always cool True Dungeon. This one had some cool puzzles.. and some very difficult puzzles... and we slayed a Shambling Mound, a Medusa (good thing we had all those scrolls of Stone to Flesh) and for the first time in our GenCon careers.. WE SURVIVED! Here is the story of the Dungeon we went through! The puzzles were paticularly devious this year! =D

and of course.. the babes make GenCon what it is... heres some pics!

So the chick above is carving SPAM.. yes SPAM... but more importantly that is DuctTape Girl.. she goes to GenCon every year and always wears home-made and revealing costumes each year. We alwats speculate as to what she will wear each given year.. and seeing her fine costumed form each year is a grand thing. More pics below... the Master Chief himself.. and me and my buds hanging out in the WotC area...
